Why weight loss after 40 works differently (and what your body needs)
You eat healthier.
You might even exercise more than before.
And yet your body seems to hold onto fat.
Especially around your belly.
If you are over 40, this is no coincidence — and certainly not a lack of discipline.
Your body is changing. And it needs a different approach.

What changes in your body after 40?
(And often even earlier)
Your estrogen levels start to fluctuate, insulin sensitivity decreases, and stress hormones gain more influence.
Your body deals with stress, nutrition, energy, and fat storage differently.
1. Your hormones manage fat storage differently
During perimenopause, the balance between estrogen and progesterone changes.
This directly affects where your body stores fat — often more around the abdomen.
Research shows that women in menopause experience an average increase in belly fat, even without a change in calorie intake.
2. Your satiety signals work less effectively
Hormones responsible for satiety and blood sugar balance react differently.
As a result, you have cravings more quickly and stay satiated for shorter periods.
Studies show that hormonal changes affect appetite regulation and hunger hormones, which can lead to more eating occasions.
3. Stress has a greater impact on your body
While you might have easily recovered from stress before, cortisol now remains active in your body for longer.
And that signal? Holding onto fat.
Chronically elevated cortisol is associated with increased abdominal fat and reduced fat burning.
Why eating less and exercising more often doesn't work
- eating less (carbohydrates) → more stress signals, your body goes into stress/famine mode
- overtraining in combination with eating less → the cortisol 'trap': even more pressure on your adrenal glands
What used to work may now be counterproductive.
What DOES work after 40?
The key is to support your body, not force it.
That means:
- gaining insight into what your body needs
- supporting hormonal balance
- calming your nervous system
- stabilizing satiety and blood sugar
Instead of general advice, this requires a personalized approach.
The role of measurement and insight
Because every body reacts differently, measurement is essential.
Innovative measurement methods can provide insight into:
- deficiencies
- stress load
- hormonal imbalance
Based on this, support can be more targeted, instead of constantly trying what “generally works”.
Your body is not working against you
The changes you are experiencing are not a fault of your body.
They are a signal that your body needs different support than before.
When you understand that, your approach changes — and often your results too.
